Restoration & Repair

Restoring & Repairing involves so many variables, that each situation and /or piece should be addressed individually. Sometimes, it is not until the piece of furniture has been thoroughly stripped, that there can be a thorough assessment of the repairs that are necessary to complete the upholstery project successfully. Unfortunately we do not have X-Ray vision, or machines that can evaluate this portion of cost liabilities that may be present.

In most quotes we anticipate absorbing some minor underlayment materials that may be required to produce the desired appearance. The ability to determine how much work may be involved is contingent upon the degree of access to inspect each piece of furniture. Unfortunately this may require a certain degree of commitment, either to having your furniture splayed open before your eyes, or a large degree of trust in the Upholsterer you choose to have a good degree of integrity. In most cases we take digital pictures of all our phases of repair for our records as well as having an example to qualify each possible situation. This applies to new upholstery quotes as well as some instances in evaluating “Repairs and Restorations”.

Areas that are usually addressed are structural integrity i.e. are the joints sturdy, does the chair wiggle; webbing i.e. extreme sagging area underneath chair in support area of springs; potential spring tying required i.e. uneven support, noticeable indications of degradation in the support area of upholstery. Last, but not least is Wood condition! This is where a great area of expertise needs to be applied. Ranging from cosmetic capabilities to knowing just where and what to use for maintaining the structural integrity of the piece. It is also the area which presents the most variables when determining any additional costs, especially with antiques.
